Similarities first generation
Apparently back in the days, families had a relatively big family, ranging from 8 to 12 family members. This is remarkable and it was a familiar occurrence. None of the grandparents had a small family. Another significant similarity is the occupations of the grandparent's mothers. All mothers shared the same profession which was being a housewife. Moving on, all four grandparents also remembered a specific event during the Second World War. They had all experienced the war and one grandparent's family even took action by helping soldiers!
Whether the food that was served in the family was healthy, is not a complicated question. The food was fresh and mainly vegetables as well as meat were eaten at that time. Two out of the four grandparents stated that their families raised field crops and grew their food themselves. This made sure that the food was healthy and nutritious. Beans, fruit and tomatoes are examples of such foodstuffs. However, the choice of foodstuffs wasn't very big as the families had to cope with the war. The families grew their food themselves, went grocery shopping or went to the bakery to acquire food.
To make sure children stay fit, schools mainly provided PE, gymnastics and even milk. Milk was very common and drunken a lot among the children. It was supposed to make you healthier and fitter. There was not a lot to choose from as well, thus milk was useful and handy to them at that time.
Differences first generation
As mentioned before, the mothers of the grandparents shared the same profession. However, the fathers in comparison did not. It differed for each parent. One worked in the agriculture while the other parent was a salesman. There was clearly a distinction present between the occupations of the father's side. Where the parents of the grandparents lived also differed from each other in many ways. The locations are dissimilar, as well as the size of the houses and particular types of houses. For example, one of the grandparents stated that they lived at farm, but another grandparent stated that they lived in a big house. Thus, not every grandparent lived a similar life.
Sports and exercises varied for each grandparent. One played soccer, while the other worked regularly at a farm. Rowing, hockey and korfball were also sports that occurred regularly. In order to stay fit, facilities are a must. Nonetheless, three out of the four grandparents stated that there were not sufficient facilities to practice sports. Reasons for that statement; the war restricted a lot and because the development in that category used to be rather small.
The grandparents partly agreed and disagreed with the statement that children are nowadays living a healthier life. Factual, it was stated that children are able to be more healthier due to the provision of a better healthcare system. Nevertheless, it was also stated that the third generation eats more junk food and candy and do less sports. The opinions are therefore different and divided.
Drawn conclusion
Not everything stayed the same in comparison to the past. One can be required of the needed things, but one does not always make use of that.
Similarities second generation.
Comparing the interviews of the parents, it is remarkable that yet no one lived together with their grandparents or cousins. They all are a nuclear families. This means that regarding the people living within a household, no particular difference could be found. All families of the parents consisted of a father ánd mother, thus there was not a single mom nor single dad who had been given the task to raise their children on their own. What else is significantly similar, is the statement made by two out of the four interviewed parents that the profession of their mother was a housewife, while the remaining mothers both owned a different profession.
As to food being healthy in the time of the parents, it differs not too much. Two of the four parents said to have eaten many nutritious foodstuffs regularly. This includes the “schijf van vijf”, meat. potatoes and vegetables which highly resemble this “schijf”. Discussing the aspect as to where these parents exactly bought their food, almost everything matches with each other. The local supermarket was the main source for food. However, the production of own fruit and vegetables was also very common, since three out of four parents have stated this. Fruits and vegetables that were produced are for example: melons, watermelons, lettuce, green beans, kale, sprouts, endive, cucumbers, aubergines, and tomatoes.
In the time of these parents, the amount of sport facilities was considered to be sufficient. There were enough gyms, running tracks and even spatial areas at home to workout and exercise. All their schools also seemed to heavily promote the importance of staying fit and maintaining a good physical well-being, as all children were provided with regular PE classes per week. Two out of four parents also said to have gotten a sports day once a year. Furthermore, one of the main question of the topic healthy life is the question whether the children nowadays have a healthier life in comparison with theirs back in the time. All four parents answered the same:’It is less healthy now.’ This is caused by a couple of factors, including the production of new chemical foodstuffs and the lack of active movement. ‘Even though there are sufficient sport facilities, digital screens seem to be absorbing most of the children’s time nowadays,’ is what Johan replied to this question. In his reply, Johan refers to the use of digital screens to be a possible cause of an unhealthier life of the children nowadays. Ban and Ammar both claimed that the food used to be more natural in their time in contrast to now, because chemicals make it rather unnatural. Candy also plays a role in an unhealthy life according to Anouk.
Differences second generation
Something that immediately stands out from the rest is that Ammar lived in a family consisting of 13 people. This is mainly the case due to the fact that Muslim people back in the days had the image of large families being something to be proud of. Thus, since Ammar lives in a Muslim family, his large family is most likely associated with ones pride. The professions distributed among the men differs per parent. This, in comparison with the fact that two mothers did have the same profession, instead of all being varied, is remarkable. Whether the parents ate healthy food, was a yes and no for one parent while the other mainly ate unhealthy food. This parent was Ammar, and the reason as to why this is, is because he lives in the Middle Eastern where mainly fatty meats are common to be eaten.
Sports among the family members of the parents varied. Among the men, soccer was mentioned twice. Furthermore were practicing the sports: hockey, tennis, golf, badminton, boxing, gymnastics, karate, athletics and weightlifting also quoted. Johan, as a child out of four, was the only one who did not practice a sport. He instead worked with his dad at the farm. Something Johan did have while the others did not, was the participation with the “Avondvierdaagse” and even having obligated swimming courses. This would mainly be due to the regulation system of his school regarding the requirements in the field of physical education. Now switching on to the comparison of life being healthier now, was partly agreed with by Anouk. She says that the number of smokers reduced, which does support a healthier lifestyle in general.
Subquestions first -> second generation.
How has the food that is served changed?
The food that is being served has changed on one hand, but hasn’t on the other hand. The parents still ate vegetables and fruit just like the grandparents used to do in the past. Vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes and carrots were still eaten. However, it’s noticeable that the parents did have a bigger food choice, as more products have been introduced and made. Development made it possible for these parents to try and buy new foodstuffs, including more nutritious food from the “schijf van vijf”. In the past this wasn’t the case and the grandparents had to deal with a restricted variety of foodstuffs, especially during the war.
How has the place where the food was bought, changed?
The place where the food was bought compared among the places of the grandparents and parents has not significantly changed a lot. Both generations used to go grocery shopping at supermarkets in order to acquire food. However, the grandparents also used bakeries for this task, most likely fresh and warm bread was bought at the bakery. Even still the parents also produced their own vegetables and fruits just like the grandparents. The generations grew crops like beans and tomatoes. These were just mere examples. However, the living conditions and reasons of them, do contrast heavily. As the grandparents had to endure the war, they ended up with having a limited choice of foodstuffs, which lead to the production of their own food. The parents however, did not have a limited amount of choices and probably pursued the growing of crops as their grandparents did the same. Basically, passing on the habits of living.
How has the practice of sports changed?
As to practising sports, both similarities and differences can be stated between the two generations. The practice of sport gradually changed comparing the time of war to the time of the parents. Soccer and hockey were common among both generations, but what does significantly stand out is that the grandparents also used to practice the sports rowing and korfball. This can be considered as a change as it was not mentioned by any of the parents. Working at a farm is a similarity as a parent still has stated to have done this type of job, therefore this would be no remarkable change too. The practice of sports did eventually change as a variety of different sports such as boxing, karate, athletics, gymnastics and weightlifting were done in the time of the parents. Unlike the grandparents, the parents used to have sufficient sport facilities such as gyms and running tracks to exercise. The grandparents did not have enough sport facilities as the development in this field was rather restricted due to the war. Thus, in short, we could conclude that the change of practising sports included the surplus of sport facilities and variety of sports during the time of the parents.
How has the role of the school in children’s physical wellbeing changed?
Schools nowadays are aware of their role, especially in children's physical wellbeing. This can be demonstrated with the “promotion” of the importance of staying fit. The parents used to be provided with regular PE classes per week, but some also participated in a sports day once a year. This statement heavily contrasts with the grandparent’s point of view on this aspect. Even though they were also provided with PE, they did not participate in any competitions or sports days. Their schools played a big role in children’s physical well-being, as milk was provided. Therefore, in conclusion, the role of the school was and has stayed important with it barely changing.
Similarities third generation
Our families nowadays aren’t very big. The only difference is Umul’s family, which consists 7 people. A noticeable similarity is that none of our families are a nuclear one anymore. We all live with either siblings and (a) parent(s). Our families also all live fairly close to the school we go to (The Walburg College). Dordrecht, Rotterdam, Hendrik Ido Ambacht and Zwijndrecht obviously are not far from the school. Isis’s family still, till this day, keeps eating food according to the “schijf van vijf”. Our lifestyle in the field of healthy food almost all match. Vegetables are eaten daily as well as fruits are eaten often. Where our food is bought is similar too. Local supermarkets are the definite main source for daily groceries. We all also don’t particularly remember a historical fact as we haven’t had to experience any impacting conflicts or wars yet. Hockey is also still very common as a sport among family members as some family members of Lois and Isis (used to) do it. Nowadays we can all agree that there are more than enough sport facilities and training spaces. There are many gyms and even basketball fields, skateparks and running tracks located in the area of Zwijndrecht meant just for recreational purposes. Whether our generation is willing to make use of these facilities, remains questioned. At our school, PE is as an obligation. We get PE once a week for in total 100 minutes. Thus, school indeed does do something to make the children stay fit. Annually we get to attend sports events such as a basketball competition or a sports day.
Differences third generation
As to the profession of our parents, no profession was outstanding common anymore. There is a great variety of jobs including fleet manager, housewife, company adviser and a couple more. The difference between the members is the fact that Lois is the only vegetarian. She eats loads more of vegetables such as beans which, in comparison with us contrasts greatly. The practice of sports has also grown to change to a bigger diversity. For example horse riding, jogging and golfing were introduced as new sports in this topic. Whether the life nowadays is healthier than our parent’s life is debatable. Lois said that her mother used to be healthy which as a result made her maintain a healthy lifestyle too. Basically, passing on the habits. Isis argued that a healthy life for our generation is greatly caused due to the development of the healthcare, which Umul agreed with.
